Good Travel and sister company Mercian Travel Centre have a long standing history of delivering travel services relevant to the needs of travellers for many years.

Parent company John Good Shipping was established in 1833 in Hull as a ships chandler before branching out into steam ship cargo services to the Baltic’s. Through visits to the region by Ambrose Good he became convinced that there was a future for tourism in Finland and he subsequently started the ‘passenger department’ and organised the first travel guide to Finland to be written in English.

In 1906 he launched ‘Off the Beaten Track’ and a brochure was produced to detail the tours being offered around the Baltic regions. Despite two world wars, the passenger department continued to develop and grow and with the advent of air travel in the 1940’s John Good & Sons Ltd was registered as an IATA Travel Agency in 1946, a licence that continues today and is the longest established within the UK.

During the 1950’s and 60’s the rise in popularity in ‘packaged holidays’ led Good Travel to organise tours throughout Europe as well as offering traditional travel agency services and the business grew to have a number of outlets within the East Yorkshire area. This continued well into the 70’s and 80’s with Good Travel being a leading independent travel agency, moving away from offering their own tours.

Changes within the industry, coupled with a refocus of the entire John Good Group led to a total change of direction in the late 90’s and early 2000’s with a move towards corporate travel. In 2005 a new management team was recruited to focus the business towards its goals….. that of being a prominent provider of bespoke travel services in regional UK locations and over recent years Good Travel evolved into Good Travel Management, primarily offering corporate travel management services to a widening client base throughout the UK and increasing their sales from £2m to £6m with locations in Hull and Grimsby and a team of 20 employees.

In 2011 Good Travel Management purchased the shareholding and assets of Mercian Travel Centre, a niche market business based in Hagley, West Midlands. Mercian Travel have been in operation for over 40 years and complimented the current Good Travel Management business by bringing areas of specialism such as Trade Missions, Tour Operating and bespoke leisure travel services.

With a team of 30 and a turnover approaching £10m, the Good Travel Group are stronger than ever to take advantage of opportunities whilst remaining close to the values and heritage that took them to where they are today.
